Beyonce and her team have been accused of stealing a sample for her Renaissance album from “Milkshake” rapper Kelis.
Kelis Believes Beyonce Did Her Wrong
Kelis took to social media to point out that the song “Energy” contained pieces of her 2000 Kaleidoscope single “Get Along With You”. She is adamant that she was never approached or asked for permission to use the sample.
On her Instagram account Bounty and Full, she said, “My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding”. “I heard about this the same way everyone else did . Nothing is ever as it seems , some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”
In another post, she added, “It’s not a collab, it’s theft.” When a fan expressed disgust with the purported theft, Kelis wrote back, “It’s ridiculous.”
Whenever it comes to being properly credited for her work, Kelis has always been outspoken. Speaking to The Guardian in 2020, she opened up about not being compensated for her work with The Neptunes. “I thought it was a beautiful and pure, creative safe space, but it ended up not being that at all,” she had said at the time. “I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do.” According to Kelis, she was “blatantly lied to and tricked” by “The Neptunes and their management and their lawyers and all that stuff.”
Tough Times for Kelis
There have been some tough times for the 42-year-old. Sadly, she lost her husband Mike Mora in March at just 37 years old. The veteran photographer had been battling stage 4 stomach cancer. More was given just 18 months to live when he was initially diagnosed in 2017. It wasn’t until after he had experienced debilitating pain in his stomach that he noticed something was wrong he said in an Instagram post.
He said he had a “Loss of appetite”. “Pain in my back also started to creep in…finally decided to do something about it. It was a bit late. But just in time.” Unfortunately, it was a little too late. Previously, Kelis was married to rap legend Nas who she had a child with.
Regardless, Beyonces album Renaissance dropped today (July 29) despite being leaked online earlier in the week. Her husband Jay-Z, Hit-Boy, and more were credited on the 16-track project.
